What this page does
One shuffle is one set. The colors share a chroma, and the hues sit near each other or across the wheel. Lightness is mixed, so the set is not all pale or all dark. Locked colors stay. A color you type is not matched to the others. Download saves this set as a picture: one stripe per color, with the hex on the stripe.
How to use this page
- Press space, or use Shuffle. On a phone, use the button.
- Lock a column with its lock button, a double-click on the color, or the number keys 1 to 5.
- Edit a color, drag a column to change the order, remove one down to two, or add one back up to five. On a phone, hold the color, then drag. A quick swipe still scrolls.
- Use the copy button on a color, next to its lock, to copy that hex. You can also copy the CSS variables or the link. The link opens this same set.
- Download the set as a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or SVG image. The file is made in the browser and is not uploaded.
How a color is chosen
Space builds the unlocked colors as one OKLCH set. They share a chroma. Most sets put some hues near a seed and the others across the wheel. The rest stay in one family, either at a mixed lightness or as a lighter group with one deeper color. About two sets in five replace one color with black, charcoal, or an off-white. The hex on the block is the sRGB color. When the OKLCH value falls outside sRGB, chroma.js clips it, and chroma is lowered until the color stays close to the requested value. That clip is not CSS Color 4 gamut mapping. The hex is black or white, whichever has the higher contrast. The color itself is not moved to raise that ratio.
Questions
Can I keep one color and change the rest?
Yes. Lock it, then press space. One color always stays unlocked, so space still has something to change.
Will the new colors match a color I typed?
No. Space builds a new set for the unlocked columns. The typed color stays because it is locked.
What does Download save?
A picture of the colors on screen. Choose PNG, JPEG, WebP, or SVG. Each stripe is one color and shows its hex. Nothing is uploaded.
